How much injection molding costs plays a big role in deciding both the price of plastic products and how much profit a company makes. The price of injection molding can be as low as $1,000 or as high as $100,000+ based on how complex, big and many cavities the mold is. Material type (steel grade), how difficult the mold design is, the number of cavities, the degree of surface finish needed and the amount of production play a big role in setting injection mold cost.
A simple mold for a basic part might cost from $1,000 to $5,000 and a complex multi-cavity mold with advanced features could cost over $50,000. By knowing the typical costs involved in injection molding, manufacturers can better decide what to do: mold base (20-30%), machining (30-40%), materials (15-20%) and additional processes (10-15%).
